Andrei Chikatilo Case Study

Andrei Chikatilo’s case was not less than a mystery for Russian police for more than two decades, until it got support from forensic psychologists.

Chikatilo has been involved in the murder of 53 Russian women and children. The chief investigator of the case, Viktor Burakov, has lost all hope due to the non-availability of any solid clue.

This made him implement a new technique. He took Dr. Alexander Bukhanovsky’s help in creating the killer’s psychological profile. With this information, he and his investigating team narrowed down to Chikatilo from a list of suspects. He confessed his dreadful crimes in 1990.

Joseph Paul Franklin Case Study

Joseph Paul Franklin was born James Clayton Vaughan Jr. to a poor family. He admired the evangelists Joseph Franklin and Joseph Goebbels, the Nazis, and therefore later changed his name. He took the decision to start a race war after reading Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

In 1977, he firebombed several synagogues and, in a few months, got involved in murdering as well. Over the next three years, he killed several people whom he considered inferior to him, blacks and Jews in particular, along the east coast of the US.

The psychologists from the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) did an in-depth profiling of Joseph Paul Franklin and circulated that information to the blood banks. They did so by assuming that, as he has no source of income, he might try to sell his blood for money.

Their assumption was right. After a few weeks, a blood bank informed the FBI, and he got arrested. He murdered a minimum of 15 people and was executed in November 2013.

Note: This is only a glimpse of one of a few case studies that we might cover. All case studies are subject to change as per current trends and developments, except a few famous ones from the past.
