A bloodstain, a strand of hair, or a trace of saliva, each one carries information that can place a person at a scene, connect a suspect to a victim, or clear someone who does not belong in the frame. This program teaches you how to find that information and use it.

The Micro Credential Program in Forensic Biology explores the vital role biological evidence plays in criminal investigations. It's a discipline that intersects life sciences and law enforcement, and this program gives you a glimpse starting from the principles to the laboratory techniques that make investigation possible.

You will start with what forensic biology is, why it matters, what forensic biologists actually do in an investigation, and how biological evidence is collected, preserved, and handled in ways to protect its integrity and ensure it remains admissible when it counts.

The course focuses on blood and bloodstain pattern analysis, the characteristics and classification of bloodstains, how to interpret what different patterns reveal about a crime, and developing skills in documentation, forensic photography, and proper packaging of biological samples.

The program covers species identification and blood grouping, the techniques used to determine the origin (human or animal) of the biological material, and to identify blood groups through laboratory analysis.

You will examine body fluids like semen, saliva, urine, and others and understand their forensic relevance and how they are analyzed. The program also introduces hair analysis and botanical evidence, including pollen, wood, diatoms, and leaves, materials that can establish powerful links between individuals and locations.

By the end of this program, you will have a deep know-how of how much biological evidence can reveal and the scientific skills you need to possess to reveal it.

MODULE 1 – INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC BIOLOGY

In this module, you will learn about the basics of forensic biology, its role in criminal investigations, the principles and significance of biological evidence, the qualifications and responsibilities of a forensic biologist, and the importance of proper collection and preservation of biological evidence. It also covers the importance of blood as a key biological material in forensic analysis and highlights the legal framework following which forensic biological investigations are carried out.

MODULE 2 – BLOOD AND BLOODSTAIN PATTERNS

This module focuses on the scientific study of blood and its application in forensic investigations; the characteristics, composition, and functions of blood; different types of bloodstains and their classification; and methods for the collection, preservation, and packaging of blood evidence in various forms. You will also learn the objectives and principles of bloodstain pattern analysis, including interpretation techniques and documentation through photography, along with associated legal and ethical aspects.

MODULE 3 – SPECIES ORIGIN AND BLOOD GROUP DETERMINATION TECHNIQUES

This module explores techniques used to determine the origin and classification of blood in forensic investigations, methods to distinguish between human and animal blood, various tests used for species identification, and methods for determining blood groups, including different laboratory techniques and systems such as ABO, MN, and Rh grouping. You will also gain an understanding of both traditional and advanced approaches used in forensic serology for accurate identification.

MODULE 4 – EXAMINATION OF BLOOD AND OTHER BODY FLUIDS

In this module, you get an overview of the examination of various biological fluids along with the identification and analysis of substances such as blood, semen, saliva, urine, feces, sweat, nasal secretions, vaginal fluid, tears, vomit, menstrual blood, and human milk. The module also covers the forensic significance of each fluid along with methods for detection, collection, and analysis in medico-legal investigations.

MODULE 5 – EXAMINATION OF HAIR AND BOTANICAL EVIDENCE

This module focuses on the forensic examination of hair and plant-based evidence, the anatomical structure of hair, stages of hair growth, and techniques used for hair identification. You will also learn ways to examine botanical evidence, including pollen grains, wood, diatoms, and leaves, and their significance in linking individuals and objects to crime scenes. It highlights the importance of microscopic and comparative analysis in interpreting such evidence in forensic investigations.
