Behind every unexplained death is a question that demands an answer. Forensic medicine exists to find it, and this program shows you how.
The Micro Credential Program in Forensic Medicine is an introductory course that explores the examination of the human body as evidence. It is a discipline that requires both medical expertise and a deep understanding of legal processes.
You will learn the relationship between medicine and the legal system and how they work together, including procedures like inquests and medico-legal autopsies. You will learn the protocols that govern post-mortem examinations, the precautions that protect the integrity of findings, and why the information found at this stage can make or break an investigation.
You will explore forensic thanatology, which is the science of death itself, along with different types and mechanisms of death, the physiological changes that occur after death, and the methods used to estimate time of death.
The program then explores how deaths are connected to medical procedures and custodial settings, including surgical complications, anesthesia-related fatalities, torture, and asphyxial deaths and how to recognize and interpret the medico-legal implications in each scenario.
The course also addresses some of the most sensitive areas of forensic medicine, which are sexual offences and child abuse. It covers studying examination procedures, the legal classification of offences, and the frameworks around consent and relevant laws.
Finally, the program covers injuries and deaths caused by thermal factors like burns, hyperthermia, and hypothermia and what they reveal in a forensic context.
By the end of this program, you will understand that forensic medicine is not just about examining bodies; it is about giving the deceased a voice in the pursuit of truth and justice.
