The course also addresses some of the most sensitive areas of forensic medicine, which are sexual offences and child abuse. It covers studying examination procedures, the legal classification of offences, and the frameworks around consent and relevant laws.

Finally, the program covers injuries and deaths caused by thermal factors like burns, hyperthermia, and hypothermia and what they reveal in a forensic context.

    MODULE 1 – LEGAL PROCEDURES: AUTOPSY AND SPECIAL CASES

    In this module, you will be introduced to forensic medicine within the Indian legal system framework, its role in medico-legal investigations, and the legal significance and requirements of inquest and exhumation procedures. You will gain insights about medicolegal autopsies, including standard protocols, precautions, and documentation. It also examines special cases such as obscure autopsies, anaphylactic deaths, and artifacts that may mislead investigations. It will help you to differentiate between true findings and postmortem changes or external influences.

    MODULE 2 – FORENSIC THANATOLOGY

    This module focuses on the scientific study of death and its medico-legal implications, covering its various definitions and concepts of death (including somatic, molecular, and brain death), mode, manner, mechanism, and causes of death, and an overview of how death is analyzed in forensic contexts. Methods to estimate time since death using postmortem changes and environmental factors will also be discussed along with essential terminologies used in medico-legal investigations.

    MODULE 3 – EXAMINATION OF MEDICAL AND CUSTODIAL DEATHS

    This module examines deaths occurring under medical care and in custodial settings, their forensic and legal implications, and deaths associated with surgical procedures, anesthesia, and blood transfusion. You will also learn about custodial deaths, including cases involving torture or negligence, emphasizing the need for thorough investigation and asphyxial deaths and their various types, providing insights into identifying causes and distinguishing between natural and unnatural deaths.

    MODULE 4 – MEDICOLEGAL ASPECTS OF SEXUAL OFFENSES AND CHILD ABUSE

    This module explores the concept of medico-legal examination in cases of sexual offenses and child abuse, focusing on the examination of both victims and accused individuals with proper evidence collection and documentation. You will gain insights about the classification of sexual offenses and the legal implications surrounding consent and non-consent, examining unnatural sexual offenses and the formulation of expert medical opinions and child abuse cases, including provisions under relevant laws such as POCSO, along with the responsibilities of medical professionals in such sensitive investigations.

    MODULE 5 – FORENSIC ASPECTS OF THERMAL INJURIES AND DOWRY-RELATED DEATHS

    This module covers the forensic and medico-legal aspects of deaths caused by thermal injuries and dowry-related violence, examination of thermal deaths, including conditions such as hyperthermia, and burn classifications and assessment methods like the Rule of Nines. The module also addresses medico-legal considerations in burn cases and the legal provisions related to dowry deaths. Additionally, it covers the forensic aspects of hypothermia and discusses characteristic autopsy findings associated with deaths due to extreme cold, enabling accurate interpretation during investigations.
