This module covers the evolution of photography, tracing its historical roots and technological advancements, the basic principles and techniques of the camera, the concept of light, including the fundamentals of capturing and manipulating light to create compelling images, the transition from black and white to colored photography and the impact both types have on visual storytelling, modern developments in photography, image enlargement techniques, the advent of digital photography, and the use of portable electronic devices.

MODULE 2 – PHOTOGRAPHY AND CAMERA

In this module, you will learn about the evolution of camera technology from its inception to contemporary innovations, various camera types (compact digital cameras, digital SLR cameras, mirrorless cameras, action cameras, 360 cameras, and film cameras), components of the camera (body, lens, sensor, flash card, and battery), and essential concepts such as depth of field, angle of view, and focal length.

The module also covers parts of lenses (wide-angle lens, standard lens, medium lens, telephoto lens, and ultra-telephoto lens), the process of exposing, developing, and printing photographs, linking the camera intricately with film negatives, and the application of photography in crime scenes and laboratories.

MODULE 3 – CRIME SCENE PHOTOGRAPHY

This module focuses on the role of visuals in preserving and presenting crucial forensic evidence. It begins with photo documentation forms and their significance in structured visual record-keeping, including approaches like overall photography, mid-range photography, and close-up photography. After this, you will gain insights about the specialized arena of photographing bodies and wounds and the challenges associated with it. The module concludes with knowledge about photographing the artifacts.

MODULE 4 – EVIDENCE PHOTOGRAPHY AND DOCUMENTATION I

In this module, you will learn about crime scene documentation and the role photography plays in capturing details crucial for investigations. You will learn the art of document and fingerprint photography, photographic documentation of bodies, wounds, and injuries; the process of photographing and documenting accidents, bloodstains on various surfaces (walls, floors, and clothing), and impression evidence (friction ridges, footwear marks, and tire prints), solidifying the visual foundation for forensic scrutiny.

    MODULE 5 – PHOTOGRAMMETRY

This module covers the intricacies of forensic photogrammetry and its approaches, including perspective grid photogrammetry (which uses the object of known dimensions within the photograph for reconstructing scenes and capturing spatial data), natural grid photogrammetry (the application of naturally occurring reference points for precise measurements and analysis), and reverse projection photogrammetry (reconstructing three-dimensional scenes from two-dimensional images).

R V Suzanne Holdsworth Case Study

Suzanne Holdsworth was a babysitter for a 2-year-old toddler, Kyle Fisher.

She was convicted of his murder and jailed for life in 2005. She was supposed to have repeatedly smashed the baby’s head against the bannister.

However, no blood, hair, or skin was found on the bannister, and hence no DNA test could be carried out.

On appeal, this verdict was cancelled and a retrial ordered.

Stephenson’s solicitors instructed investigators to re-examine the photographed injury marks, which were compared with the bannister by the prosecution scientist.

Furniture, fixtures, and fittings present in the room were also examined to check if they too were accountable for the baby’s injuries.

With this, they concluded that other furniture items might have produced the injuries to Kyle.

His medical examination also indicated that he might have an epileptic seizure (a brain disorder called fit), causing him to thrash about. The available evidence, along with medical findings about Kyle, resulted in Suzanne Holdsworth’s release.
